Middleweight standout David Lopez (38-12, 23 knockouts) outworked and outpointed Ossie Duran (23-6-2, 9 KOs) in the 10-round main event of an ESPN2-televised card from the Diamond Desert Casino in Tucson, Arizona Friday night.

Lopez, who won a competitive unanimous decision by scores of 97-93 and 96-94 (twice), is a 6-foot-2 southpaw with long arms. He used his reach effectively in the early rounds of the bout, jabbing and stepping around Duran from a distance while using the straight right to set up three- and four-punch combinations that included body shots.

However, Duran landed well-timed right hands in the middle rounds and forced the naturally bigger man back in the late rounds of the bout to make things a little closer on the score cards.

Lopez, who is rated No. 6 in THE RING's middleweight rankings, weighed in at 154¾ pounds for the bout and plans to campaign in the junior middleweight division this year.

Friday's victory is Lopez's 14th consecutive win. He's 19-1 in his last 20 bouts dating back to 2003.

In the co-featured bout of the Golden Boy Promotions card junior welterweight prospect Hector Sanchez (18-0, 8 KOs) won an unpopular eight-round unanimous decision over former 140-pound titleholder DeMarcus Corely (33-11-1, 19 KOs) by unanimous scores of 77-74.

Sanchez, a rangy 6-foot-1 boxer, jabbed effectively from the outside but constantly backpedaled from the forward-marching veteran who landed solid single power shots while walking down the 22-year-old Puerto Rican.

“He did enough to win, he wanted it more,” Oscar De La Hoya said of Corely during the Friday Night Fights broadcast.

In the opening bout of the telecast, Philadelphia's former amateur standout Karl Dargan (4-0, 2 KOs) stopped Rudy Valdez (2-4, 1 KO) in the fourth round of their scheduled four-round junior welterwight bout.
