Badou Jack defeated George Groves by a split decision to retain his WBC super middleweight title on the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Andre Berto card Saturday in Las Vegas.

Jack (20-1-1, 12 knockouts) won the title in his previous fight, a majority decision over Anthony Dirrell in April. Groves (21-3, 16 KOs) has now failed in three attempts to win a major belt. He lost back to back title fights to Carl Froch in 2013 and last year.

Jack put Groves down late in the first round with a side right to the temple, which wobbled the Englishman. However, Groves recovered quickly and was competitive thereafter.

The fighters both landed their jabs with consistency and traded periods in which they asserted themselves. However, Jack seemed to land more hard, eye-catching punches. That might’ve been the difference in the fight.

The scores: 114-113 for Groves, and 115-112 and 116-111 for Jack.

Groves threw more shots but landed fewer, according to punch stats. He was 154 of 721 overall, Jack 210 of 506. Jack outlanded Groves in power punches 127 (of 244) to 68 (of 266).
