Britain’s Martin Murray is looking to make a significant statement at super middleweight this Saturday by taking out Colombian Jose Miguel Torres en route to earning himself a title shot.

It may be only his second outing at 168 pounds but the St. Helens man, who came up short in three title challenges as a middleweight, is determined to face the division elite sooner rather than later.

WBO titlist Arthur Abraham is his top target, while compatriots James DeGale, the IBF beltholder, and George Groves, in line for a crack at the WBC belt, are also on the radar should Murray (31-2-1, 14 knockouts) beat Torres (31-6, 27 KOs) this weekend at the First Direct Arena, Leeds.

”I really I want the Arthur Abraham fight,” said the 32-year-old Englishman in a press release Tuesday. “Eddie Hearn was with the Sauerlands last week, so hopefully it gets made. I doubt he would give me a voluntary defense as I’m too dangerous – so I would have to go down the route of becoming mandatory challenger in one of the governing bodies.

“James DeGale has the IBF and I hope George Groves wins the WBC as that’s a fight I believe we can make. Frank Buglioni is fighting Fedor Chudinov in a few weeks. I’m not picky over which of these guys I fight – I want them all.

“Jose Torres is tough and I’m too experienced to overlook him. I need to go in there and do the business.

“The way I feel in the gym at the minute at the new weight is unbelievable. I’ve had a week off since the beginning of May and the strength conditioning I’ve been doing has been superb.

“I’m with the best promoter in Matchroom and the biggest boxing platforms in Sky Sports – big things are on the horizon for me.”
