British super middleweight prospect Frank Buglioni will challenge Fedor Chudinov for the “regular” WBA super middleweight title on July 24 in London, England.
*Note: THE RING only recognizes Andre Ward as WBA champion at this weight
Buglioni (16-1-1, 12 knockouts) was scheduled to face Lee Markham in a rematch of a thrilling domestic encounter which ended in a draw last month, but the chance to face Chudinov, rated No. 9 by THE RING at 168 pounds, was too good to turn down.
“This is a golden opportunity,” said Buglioni in a press release issued by Queensberry Promotions. “I’m going in with a class fighter in Chudinov who went to (Felix) Sturm’s backyard and beat him. I know what I’ve got to do and will train to beat him.”
Chudinov, from Serpukhov, Moscow, pulled off a huge upset when he dethroned Sturm last month via split decision. He has a perfect record of 13-0 (10 KO’s) and is accustomed to traveling, so a trip to England will not faze the game 27-year-old.
He said, “I have no problem coming to London. Buglioni is tough and strong with plenty of heart, but I must break his heart in his home city. I will fight anywhere in the world because that is what I do.”
Chudinov’s brother Dmitry was stopped in the twelfth and final round of a middleweight bout with Chris Eubank Jnr in February.
