Nietes-Fuentes ends in draw
WBO junior flyweight titleholder Donnie Nietes and reigning WBO minimumweight beltholder Moises Fuentes had to settle for a majority draw in their battle for Nietes’ title Saturday in Cebu City, Philippines. Two judges scored the bout 114-114 even while the third had it 115-113 for Nietes.
The camps of Nietes (31-1-4, 17 knockouts) from Bacolod City, Philippines and Fuentes (16-1-1, 8 KOs) of Mexico City, Mexico have both stated publicly that they are interested in a rematch to settle the issue.
Nietes, who has held titles at 105 and 108 pounds, is ranked no. 2 by THE RING at junior flyweight while Fuentes is the magazine’s No. 1 at strawweight.
In the co-featured bout, Genesis Servania (19-0, 7 KOs) of Bacolod City scored a seventh-round technical knockout of Indonesian Angky Angkotta (26-9-1, 14 KOs) in a junior featherweight bout. The win marks a high point in the 21-year-old Servania’s career as Angkotta is the only fighter to hold an official victory over Nietes.
