Nonito Donaire stopped Hernan Marquez at 2:59 of the eighth round of a scheduled 12-round junior bantamweight fight on the Juan Manuel Lopez-Bernabe Concepcion undercard Saturday in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Donaire (24-1, 16 knockouts) fought the first four-plus rounds left-handed, as he promised to do before the fight. However, he had difficulty from that stance with the smaller, but skillful and tough Marquez (27-2, 20 KOs).

The Filipino-born Californian switched back to his natural right-handed stance in the fifth round, during which he knocked down Marquez and took firm control of the fight.

Donaire ended matters with a perfect left uppercut in the final seconds of the eighth round, which sent Marquez sprawling to the canvas. He was able to get up and would've survived the round but his corner stopped the fight to prevent him from taking a beating.

Donaire said this would be his final fight at 115 pounds. He wants to fight Fernando Montiel at 118 if the THE RING’s No. 1-rated bantamweight is willing to meet him.
