Alejandro ‘Payasito’ Hernandez outpoints Izao Carranza

Junior featherweight veteran Alejandro ‘Payasito’ Hernandez struggled early against Izao Carranza. ‘The Little Clown’ made the necessary adjustments and eventually had the last laugh.

Hernandez won a 10-round unanimous decision late Friday night at the Auditorio Blackberry in Mexico City.

With the win, Hernandez improves to 31-11-2, 16 KOs, while Carranza drops to 15-7-1, 9 KOs.

It was a rematch of their January 2014 bout, which Hernandez won by decision. Both Hernandez and Carranza reside in Mexico City.

Carranza was able to land early and often in the opening round. He found success walking Hernandez down, scoring with punches to the head.

Hernandez seemed to figure out Carranza by the third round. While he backed up from an advancing Carranza, the three-time world title challenger was able to land repeatedly with right hands to the head of Carranza.

By the midway point of the fight, Carranza’s left eye was beginning to close from all the repeated blows Hernandez was able to land. Carranza did not let up from applying pressure going into the later rounds, but Hernandez continued to land, including attacking the body whenever Carranza was within punching range.

All three judges scored the bout in favor of Hernandez, 99-91, 99-91, and 97-93.

“I was very well-prepared and motivated for this fight,” said Hernandez after the fight. “It showed tonight. “He (Carranza) took punches and he responded like I expected him to. It wasn’t an easy fight. I realized that from the beginning and I wasn’t overconfident.”

Hernandez has now won six of last seven bouts, with his only blemish being a 12 round split decision loss to Tomoki Kameda.

In the eight round co-feature of the ‘Boxeo Telemundo’ broadcast, bantamweight Salvador Juarez (6-3-2, 2 KOs) won an eight round split decision over Emmanuel Dominguez (16-5-2, 11 KOs).

One judge scored the bout 78-74 for Dominguez, while the other two judges scored the bout in favor of Juarez, 78-75 and 78-74.
