Sean Monaghan under consideration to face Juergen Braehmer
Long Island’s Sean Monaghan is on a shortlist of leading candidates to face Juergen Braehmer in a secondary light heavyweight title fight on March 19 after Thomas Oosthuizen withdrew for personal reasons, Don Majeski, U.S. representative for Sauerland Promotions, told RingTV.com on Thursday.
If the fight with Braehmer, THE RING’s No. 6-rated light heavyweight, doesn’t take place, then Monaghan (26-0, 16 KOs) would proceed with an off-TV clash on the undercard of Terence Crawford’s junior welterweight title fight at Madison Square Garden with Hank Lundy on Feb. 27, according to Top Rank matchmaker, Brad Goodman, which handles Monaghan.
Swedish light heavyweight, Erik Skoglund (24-0, 11 knockouts) is among the other candidates under consideration to face Braehmer (47-2, 35 KOs).
Majeski and Goodman expect a decision to be made on Braehmer’s next opponent by the end of Thursday.
This isn’t the first time that Braehmer-Oosthuizen has fallen through. They were supposed to meet in November but a hand injury to Braehmer scuttled that bout.
Their most recent bout was supposed to take place on March 12 in Germany, but Goodman said that Braehmer’s next fight will be pushed back a week to March 19.
Monaghan, a former bricklayer, has been angling for a title fight in recent years and has been vocal about getting his shot.
