The two-bout HBO Latino telecast on July 11 is now a triple-header with the addition of unbeaten featherweight prospect Joseph Diaz Jr.
The 2012 U.S. Olympian will fight Rene Alvarado in a 10-round at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, Calif., Golden Boy Promotions announced on Thursday afternoon. The Diaz-Alvarado bout will open the HBO Latino telecast, beginning at 11 p.m. ET/ PT. In the main event, Mauricio Herrera (21-5, 7 KOs) will square off against Hank Lundy (25-4-1, 12 KOs) in a 10 round junior welterweight bout.
Rounding out the telecast will be a 10-round lightweight bout between once-beaten lightweight contenders Michael Perez (22-1-1, 10 KOs) and Sharif Bogere (27-1, 19 KOs).
Diaz (16-0, 10 KOs), one of Golden Boy Promotions’ most talented prospects, is building upon a successful start to 2015. On March 6, Diaz overwhelmed Juan Luis Hernandez, eventually stopping him in the third round.
In his last bout on May 9 at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Diaz won a one-sided 10 round decision over Giovanni Delgado. During the bout, Diaz reportedly suffered an injury to his right bicep, but it did not require surgery.
Alvarado (22-4, 15 KOs) has fought to mixed results in the last 16 months. On Feb. 15 of last year, Alvarado stopped Robinson Castellanos in the ninth round, but dropped a 12-round unanimous decision to Rocky Juarez three months later.
The Managua, Nicaragua resident lost a 10-round unanimous decision to Eric Hunter on January 20, and in his last bout on March 21, stopped Rafael Castillo in the third round.
