Gennady Golovkin defeated Curtis Stevens by an eighth-round technical knockout to retain his WBA middleweight title Saturday in New York City.

Golovkin (28-0, 25 knockouts) put Stevens (25-4, 18 KOs) down with a double left hook in the second round and seemed to control the fight the rest of his way, methodically breaking down his opponent with vicious shots to the head and body.

Stevens’ corner stopped the fight after the eighth round, during which Stevens took a bad pounding with his back against the ropes.

Stevens, a former light heavyweight known for his power, landed a few good shots but never hurt Golovkin.
