Mike Towell of Scotland has died from injuries suffered in a fight on Thursday night in Glasgow, according to reports.

Towell, 25, went down twice and was knocked out in the fifth round by Dale Evans, after which he was carried from the ring on a stretcher and rushed to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. He reportedly died there Friday with his family at his side.

Towell was undefeated with 11 wins going into the fight, which was a British welterweight title eliminator.

The British boxing community was devastated by the tragic news. A number of prominent figures expressed their condolences in tweets.

Promoter Eddie Hearn was among them: “Absolutely devastated by the passing of Mike Towell – all of our thoughts with his friends and family at this time.” And trainer Shane McGuigan: “Heartbreaking news that Mike Towell has lost his life. May he rest in peace, thoughts go out to his loved ones.”

Evans (12-3-2, 4 KOs) had not made a statement after Towell’s passing but was quoted by The Telegraph as saying immediately after the fight: “I never wanted to see my opponent being stretchered out of the ring. Who would ever want that sight? That was so hard for his family and my heart goes out to them.”
