Sadam Ali will likely return on the Canelo Alvarez-Liam Smith undercard on Sept. 17 on HBO PPV in his first action since his crushing loss to Jessie Vargas, Golden Boy VP Eric Gomez told RingTV.com on Friday.

An opponent has not been determined but Ali (22-1, 13 knockouts) will look to bounce back after he was stopped in the ninth round by Vargas for a welterweight title on March 5 in an HBO co-feature from Washington, D.C. Despite the loss, Golden Boy is still firmly behind Ali, Gomez said.

“I had a conversation with his father and he’ll be ready,” Gomez said in a phone interview. “He’s just finishing (fasting for) Ramadan and then he’s going to go back into training. We’re still committed to Sadam and the plan with him is to get him a couple of fights and then get him back to where he was and go after a world title.”
