Chris Arreola on scale fukuda

In the colorful and entertaining career of heavyweight Chris Arreola, his latest mishap somehow doesn’t seem so strange.

Arreola, who was suspended 90 days for testing positive for marijuana in his last bout against Travis Kauffman, fractured his ankle two weeks ago. He has a doctor’s appointment on Tuesday to determine when he can resume his career, according to his longtime trainer Henry Ramirez. The injury isn’t the shocker. No, it’s how he hurt himself that has added to Arreola’s reputation for nonconformity. According to Ramirez, the two-time world title challenger rolled his ankle getting out of a car.

“He said he was stepping out of a car from the edge of his grass to where the driveway starts and there’s a little gap and he got his foot in there,” Ramirez told RingTV.com on Monday night. “It was pretty grotesque to be honest. It was ugly, man. But all the swelling is gone. He got some X-rays and we’re going to see the doctor (on Tuesday) to get a better timeframe. Hopefully it’s not going to be too long.”

Arreola, 35, was in talks before the injury to face former U.S. Olympian Dominic Breazeale (17-0, 15 KOs) on April 30, Ramirez said. A day after Ramirez trekked to San Diego to set up his training camp for the bout, the injury occurred.

“We’re hopeful he can resume training in three to four weeks because it’s already been two weeks already,” Ramirez said. “We’ll know a lot more after tomorrow.” It’s not definite if Arreola (36-4-1, 31 KOs) will still face Breazeale at a different time in an interesting crossroads bout.

“I think it depends how long he will be off,” the trainer said. “If he’s going to be off a couple months I doubt that’s going to be something right now because the other guy has to fight. If it’s something where maybe he can start training in a couple weeks, then I’m sure it’s a real possibility but everything depends on the news we get (on Tuesday).”

Arreola’s split decision victory over Kauffman in December was changed to a no-decision after he tested positive for marijuana. It was the second time that Arreola has tested positive for the drug in his career. Despite the setbacks, Arreola is still regarded as an exciting name in a rejuvenated division.
