Marcos Maidana is expected to fight Sept. 16 in his native Argentina in the wake of his canceled matchup against Robert Guerrero.

Maidana’s advisor Sebastian Contursi told RingTV.com that the fight will take place in the Villa Ballester area of Buenos Aires, where Maidana has lived since he was 16. His opponent has not been determined.

The junior welterweight contender was supposed to have fought Guerrero on Aug. 27 on HBO but Guerrero had to pull out because of a shoulder injury.

The WBA then named Maidana what it calls its “regular champion.” Khan is the WBA 140-pound titleholder.

“We discussed it with Golden Boy Promotions and agreed that Marcos needs to stay busy after the long and hard training camp he had,” said Contursi, who made arrangements with Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Eric Gomez. “That’s why … we are planning to have a fight for him in Buenos Aires on Sept. 16. At this stage, it is premature to have any opponent named as you can imagine, but we are trying to get one in the next few days.

“Marcos would be actually fighting in his neighborhood. For his fans in Argentina, it is always great to have Maidana fighting here as he has a huge support. Last time he fought in Argentina, we sold out the Luna park stadium with 11,000 people. Overall, the idea is having Marcos busy, make the first defense of his WBA regular super lightweight title, and, God provided, being in line for a big fight before the end of the year.”

Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer said he is working with a number or prospective opponents for Maidana but would not disclose any of them.

“It would be counterproductive to say what any of those scenarios might be, but we have obviously been in constant communication with Team Maidana to update them on what is happening with Robert Guerrero. And as we know Robert’s going in on Wednesday again to determine how long he’s going to be out,” said Schaefer.

“But it seems to me that best case, he’s going to be out for two months. Worst case, he’s going to be out for somewhere from four to six months. Marcos Maidana will not wait. He will have a fight before a potential rescheduling of Guerrero fight takes place.”

Maidana trained for three months, one in his native Argentina and two more in Puerto Rico, in preparation for the Guerrero fight. “I was 100 percent ready in all aspects,” said Maidana, “physically, mentally and in boxing terms.”

Then came the bad news: Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 knockouts) suffered a shoulder injury while throwing a punch during sparring on Wednesday, forcing the entire card to be canceled.

Maidana was devastated.

“It was terribly disappointing, especially when you hear the news only eight days before the fight,” he told RingTV.com by e-mail. “I cannot believe that something like this happened, but this is boxing. Many people in the industry tell me that they found it strange that you get injured that badly at that stage of the preparation when you don’t spar hard and your team takes care of you as if you were a little baby. But accidents can happen.”

A 90-minute evaluation on Monday confirmed that Guerrero had suffered a partial tear in his left rotator cuff. While it is not the end of Guerrero’s career, the injury casts doubt on whether Maidana will get a shot at him.

“From what we heard, Guerrero’s injury might be serious, so I don’t think we could count on rescheduling that fight anytime soon,” said Maidana (30-2, 27 knockouts). “If his injury was bad enough to make him pull out from such a big fight, that means that he will probably have a long recovery.”

Maidana is hopeful that a credible opponent will be signed.

“This is a hot division, and there are many big names around,” he said.

Maidana is coming off a majority-decision victory over three-division belt-winner Erik Morales in April, which followed a unanimous-decision loss to WBA and IBF junior welterweight titleholder Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KOs) in December.

Morales faces Lucas Mattysse (28-2, 26 KOs) for the WBC’s vacant belt. The winner would then be in line to meet Khan, who is scheduled to return to the ring on Dec. 10 against an opponent to be determined.

Maidana figures to be in the mix if he gets past his Sept. 17 opponent.

“We’re trying to see if HBO can give us another date, and then we’ll go from there. Until then, he’ll take like a stay-busy fight that they’re going to entertain because he wants to keep in shape,” said Gomez. “Maidana was in great shape and he was doing all of this hard work in Puerto Rico, and they want to stay in shape. We’re looking at different possibilities.”

Maidana wants a rematch with Khan, who he nearly knocked out in the 10th round before losing a unanimous decision. Khan-Maidana was named Fight of The Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America.

“I’ve heard that Amir Queen Con [Khan] has a date on Dec. 10, yet I don’t believe this big mouth has the balls to face me again. He keeps fooling his own fans by making excuses all the time. Everyone in boxing wanted that rematch. … I think I deserve it, and he knows it,” said Maidana.

“But instead he petitions the WBA from preventing that fight by saying that he has biggest challenges ahead. I wonder what challenge would be bigger than getting in the ring again with the man who made you run for your life and made you pray to God that the fight did not last one more round?”

Schaefer said Maidana remains popular because of his style, which should work in his favor in the search for an opponent.

“Marcos Maidana is certainly one of the most exciting fighters not just in the 140-pound division but frankly in any weight class. As such, we are going to look for other challenges for Marcos Maidana,” said Schaefer.

“The good news is that we know that Marcos Maidana is willing to fight anyone. So we have to discuss internally possible alternatives for Marcos Maidana.”
