Featherweight prospect Gary Russell Jr. could return to the ring in an HBO-televised bout on the undercard of a Sept. 3 main event featuring IBF welterweight titleholder Jan Zaveck and ex-beltholder Andre Berto,
the undefeated southpaw's father and trainer Gary Russell Sr. confirmed on Monday.
Russell rose to 17-0 (10 knockouts) with Saturday night's eight-round unanimous decision rout of Eric Estrada on the under card of WBA junior welterweight king Amir Khan's fifth-round stoppage of IBF counterpart Zab Judah.
"I was told that Sept. 3 is the date that they were looking at," said Gary Russell Sr. "But it's not locked in yet and we haven't determined an opponent."
Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer initially informed RingTV.com of the plans to bring back Russell, who is advised by Al Haymon.
"It's still early, but that's the date that [adviser] Al Haymon brought to us," said Gary Russell Jr. "We really don't want to rush him, but HBO was really pleased with his performance."
