Knockout CP Freshmart held on to the WBA strawweight title with a unanimous decision win over Robert “Toto” Landero Tuesday in Chonburi, Thailand.

The scores were 117-111, 115-113 and 119-110, the last of which did not reflect the better-than-anticipated effort from Landero, an unheralded fighter competing outside the Philippines for the first time.

Freshmart, whose real name is Thammanoon Niyomtrong, controlled the action early, using his jab to the body to bring the taller Landero down to size, setting him up for lead right hands. Landero’s fortunes brightened in the fourth when he momentarily buzzed Freshmart with a counter left hook in an exchange, and by the fifth a cut had opened on the corner of Freshmart’s left eye.

The cut may have awakened Freshmart’s senses, or caused Landero to get wild, as the Filipino swung for the fences and whiffed against the incumbent titleholder making the fourth defense of the belt. Freshmart’s greater physical strength enabled him to bully Landero on the inside, where Lander’s longer, wider punches were ineffective.

Freshmart (17-0, 7 knockouts) is the No. 2-rated 105-pounder in the RING ratings, behind compatriot Wanheng Menayothin. Landero drops to 10-2-2 (2 KOs).
