Talented but enigmatic Frankie Gomez is “back in the gym” and targeting a return this fall, either in late September or early October, Golden Boy VP Eric Gomez told RingTV.com.

Golden Boy is done coddling Gomez and wants to make a fight with him against any of the big names at 140 to 147. “With Frankie, it’s time,” said Eric Gomez, who is not related to Frankie. “So we want to try to give him a big fight. He’s ready to go after any of the top fighters. If any of the top fighters are available, then we’ll put him in with one of the top names.”

East LA’s Gomez (21-0, 13 knockouts) has had his issues with making weight and showing up to the gym. Reports have surfaced that he’s been absent from the Wild Card, where he trains with Freddie Roach, since his win against Mauricio Herrera on May 7 at welterweight on the Canelo-Khan undercard. But Eric Gomez didn’t seem too concerned, saying he’s been working out on his own.

“He’s back in the gym, he took some time off for personal reasons,” Gomez said. “We’ll be bringing him back in either late September or sometime in October.” Gomez was asked if he thinks Gomez is finally committed to the sport and past his previous problems.

“I can’t predict anything but he’s back in the gym and he’s training,” Gomez said. “He looked very good in his last fight. It was somewhat of a test, facing Mauricio Herrera. Mauricio gave him a tough fight, but the kid gutted it out and he won. We’ll give him a date and set up his next match and go from there.”
