A month after T-Mobile Arena opens in Las Vegas, the new venue will host its first boxing event with THE RING middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez’s WBC title defense against Amir Khan on May 7 on HBO Pay-Per-View, Golden Boy Promotions announced on Friday.

A deal was struck earlier this week for the fight to take place there. The venue, long rumored to be the favorite to host the fight, officially opens on April 6 just west of the Las Vegas strip. Sites in Dallas, San Antonio, Houston and New York also competed for Alvarez-Khan, according to Golden Boy vice president Eric Gomez.

“The new T-Mobile Arena was clearly the perfect venue choice to host the battle that will be Canelo vs. Khan on May 7,” Golden Boy Chairman and CEO Oscar De La Hoya said in a press release. “Boxing in Las Vegas is truly an exciting event, and the fans with tickets to the fight will be in for a treat watching the fight in this new, state-of-the-art venue.”

The Las Vegas-rock band The Killers (with special guests Wayne Newton and Shamir) will open the arena on April 6, according to the T-Mobile Arena website.
