Sammy Vasquez moved closer to a title shot by stopping Aron Martinez after six rounds in a welterweight fight on the Danny Garcia-Robert Guerrero card Saturday at Staples Center.

Vasquez (21-0, 14 knockouts) thoroughly outboxed his overmatched opponent, scoring with quick, hard punches with consistency and taking few shots in return in the title elminator. Martinez (20-5-1, 4 KOs) quit on his stool after the sixth round, indicating that he was unable to continue. He apparently injured his left elbow.

Vasquez is hoping to fight the winner of the Garcia-Guerrero fight but that hasn’t been settled.

Martinez was coming off the biggest victory of his career, a unanimous decision victory over Devon Alexander in October.
