RING and WBC light heavyweight champ Adonis Stevenson tweeted that he will defend his titles against Tommy Karpency on Sept. 11 in Toronto.
Stevenson (26-1, 21 knockouts) had a huge 2013, winning his titles when he stopped Chad Dawson in the first round and being named THE RING Fighter of the Year. However, the Haitian-Canadian has since lost that momentum for lack of a top-tier opponent.
He outpointed Andrzej Fonfara and stopped Dmitry Sukhotsky in 2014 and then decisioned Sakio Bika this past April.
Karpency (25-4-1, 14 KOs) was a fringe contender but became more marketable when he defeated Dawson by a split decision last October. The Adah, Pennsylvania, product has won four in a row since losing to Nathan Cleverly (for the WBO 175-pound title) and Fonfara back to back in 2012.
“He’s gonna hurt,” Stevenson said on the tweet.
Karpency is ranked No. 9 by the WBC.
