Andre Berto made his first public comments since rumors popped up that he could face Floyd Mayweather Jr. on September 12 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, a showdown that could be featured on CBS rather than Mayweather’s usual pay-per-view platform.
“I’m happy to be in the running for this fight and am definitely up for the challenge,” Berto stated in a press release sent out on Wednesday afternoon. “I know it will be a great fight if it happens.”
Berto (30-3, 23 knockouts), a former WBC and IBF welterweight titleholder, was last in the ring for a sixth-round stoppage against Josesito Lopez in March. Berto is 3-3 in his last six bouts, last losing to Jesus Soto Karass by 12th-round TKO.
No official announcement on whom Mayweather will fight next has been made by Mayweather, Mayweather Promotions or Showtime/CBS, but one is expected soon.
