Erick Bone will replace ill Garcia vs. Shawn Porter

The second Premier Boxing Champions show has been snake bitten after a last-minute switch now has Shawn Porter facing Erick Bone instead of his original opponent, Roberto Garcia. The change salvages what would have been a devastating cancelation for PBC’s second show on Spike TV, which takes place at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California.
The drama began at Thursday’s weigh-in when Porter hit the scale and waited for Garcia to take his turn.
And he waited, and waited until he realized Garcia would not be showing up.
According to a press release issued by Swanson Communications, Garcia ended up being hospitalized for an undisclosed illness just before the weigh-in. Rumors began to circulate as to what would happen to Porter (24-1-1, 15 knockouts), considering that he was the headliner for the card. However, things came together and Erick Bone (16-1, 8 KOs) will step in to face Porter on short notice at a contractually agreed-upon weight of 149 pounds. The fight will remain a 12-round affair.
“I can say that I’m disappointed, because I expected [Garcia] to come in here and to put forth a great fight,” Porter said after finding out his new opponent. “But I’ve got to move forward. It’s a personal challenge for me.”
Bone’s last fight was in October when he won a unanimous decision against Peter Oluoch. It was the Ecuadorian’s fourth consecutive victory since dropping a split decision to against Alberto Mosquera in 2013. Porter will obviously be a huge step up in competition for Bone but “Showtime” doesn’t necessarily see this as a cakewalk.
“I’m just going to treat this like it’s a tournament, because when you’re in a tournament, you don’t know who you’re going to fight,” Porter said. “You just get into the ring, and you make the adjustments and do what you do. We’ll move forward.”
