Adams, Gasparyan, Thompson, Skorokhod advance to Boxcino semi-final
Brandon Adams, Vito Gasparyan, John Thompson and Stanyslav Skorokhod all advanced to the semi-final round of the Boxcino 2015 jr. middleweight tournament on Saturday in Uncasville, Connecticut.
Adams (16-1, 11 knockouts), a Los Angeles native who was a Boxcino 2014 middleweight tournament runner-up, scored a fifth-round stoppage over Alex Perez, sending him to the canvas with a right hand for the win at 2:47 of the round.
Vito Gasparyan scored a 6-round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Simeon Hardy, largely by scoring points on the inside.
Gasparyan won by scores of 60-54, 59-55 and 58-56 and is now 15-3-5 (8 KOs). He dedicated the win to his trainer Justin Fortune, who wasn’t present due to illness.
Late replacement John Thompson boxed his way to a 6-round unanimous decision over Ricardo Pinell, putting his height and reach advantages together with effective combination punching.
“I outboxed him for the most part,” said Thompson. “I was able to know a little about him and I went off what I saw on YouTube.”
Thompson, of Newark, New Jersey, won by scores of 60-54 on all three cards and is now 15-1 (5 KOs).
Ukrainian Syanyslav Skorokhod (9-0, 7 KOs) scored a TKO over previously undefeated Michael Moore, flooring him twice before the bout was stopped at 1:03 the fourth round.
“I was prepared for a southpaw and I knew the pressure would be the difference,” said Skorokhod. “Once I applied the pressure, I saw he could not do anything. I can prepare for any kind of the style being that I train with some of the best fighters at Wild Card Gym.”
Adams will now meet Gasparyan while Skorokhod will fight Thompson on April 3 in Corona, California, which will be televised on ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights.”
The four quarterfinal heavyweight division bouts will be televised live on Feb. 20., also on FNF.
