Marcos Maidana awaits daughter’s birth, all else on hold
Marcos “Chino” Maidana is preparing for a big week.
The newly-crowned WBA welterweight titleholder is expecting the birth of his daughter on Wednesday in Argentina, tentatively plans to be in attendance at the March 8 junior middleweight clash between Canelo Alvarez and Alfredo Angulo in Las Vegas, and could begin training on March 10 in Oxnard, Calif., for his May 3 unification bout with RING and WBC 147-pound champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.
"I think that [the birth] will be around Wednesday or Thursday, but we are just waiting and we're just sort of speculating. Once again, we have to wait for the birth of his daughter," said manager Sebastian Contursi.
"I have heard that they're saying that they want to have us [in Oxnard] at the Canelo fight for a press conference on the same date, March 8. But we will have to await his daughter's birth, and I'll talk to Al Haymon about that. If we're available, we want to be there for Canelo's fight. We have to wait on God."
Maidana (35-3, 31 knockouts) is coming off December's unanimous decision over Adrien Broner, representing his fourth straight victory and dethroning the previously unbeaten Broner as WBA welterweight titleholder.
