Negotiations are ongoing for a May 24 bout that would match RING/WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson against Andrzej Fonfara at Bell Centre in Montreal, Stevenson's promoter Yvon Michel informed RingTV.com on Friday.

Michel said that he has been in talks with Fonfara's promoter Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing.

"I have been communicating with Leon, and I have a message to call him back. I sent him an offer, and it came back with a a couple of changes, so we'll have a discussion about that later today," said Michel.

"I don't see, really, any major problems, but we never know in boxing until it is signed. So that's why I don't want to commit too much. Once the deal is signed, then we hope to spread the good story."

A 36-year-old southpaw, Stevenson (23-1, 20 knockouts) would be after his 11th consecutive stoppage win against Fonfara. Stevenson's sixth-round knockout of Tony Bellew in November was his fourth stoppage win in as many victories during 2013.

The 26-year-old Fonfara has won 15 straight, 12 of them by stoppage, and was last in action during December's second-round knockout of Samuel Miller.

The win over Miller followed Fonfara's ninth-round stoppage of ex-beltholder Gabriel Campillo in August. Fonfara (25-2, 15 KOs) last suffered defeat against Derrick Findley by second-round knockout in July 2008.

"We're in the process, and negotiations are ongoing, so of course, we want the fight. Obviously, my guy has always wanted to fight for the world title," said Margules.

"My guy feels that he's got a good chance to beat Stevenson, and it's a fight that we've specifically gone after. It's not a fight that was offered to us on the fly. It's like, we're No. 1 in the WBO and in the IBF, so we got offered the Kovalev fight, and we're in the mix with anybody. But this is a fight that we want."
