RingTV.com asked fans who they wanted to see Gennady Golovkin fight next after the undefeated WBA middleweight titleholder stopped Curtis Stevens. The overwhelming choice, according to a poll, was THE RING/WBC champ Sergio Martinez.

Martinez (52-2-2, 28 knockouts), who scored a close unanimous decision against unbeaten Martin Murray in his last bout in March, has held the lineal middleweight title since outpointing Kelly Pavlik in April of 2010. A little more than half (52.9 percent) of approximately 4,500 votes chose Martinez as the man to test the mettle of Golovkin (28-0, 25 KOs), who has so far steamrolled his competition.

Some fans believe that Martinez, who was dropped in the Pavlik and Murray bouts, is ripe for the taking. The 38-year-old veteran, who has had to undergo surgery for leg and knee injuries after his last two bouts, was also knocked down in his title defenses against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Matthew Macklin, who only lasted three rounds with Golovkin. However, others believe the ring savvy, natural talent and awkward southpaw style of Martinez can expose defensive flaws and athletic limitations in GGG’s game.

The winner of the Nov. 16 Andre Ward-Edwin Rodriguez super middleweight championship was the poll’s next highest vote getter (15.6 percent), followed by undefeated WBO middleweight beltholder Peter Quillin (14.4 percent) and Chavez Jr. (13.5 percent).
