Promoter Peter Rivera said that a deal is close for former two-belt titleholder Giovani Segura of Mexico, to challenge Puerto Rico’s Jonathan Gonzalez in a flyweight bout on Aug. 17 in Puerto Rico.

“Jonathan Gonzalez is a 112-pounder that we have who will be fighting Giovanni Segura on Aug. 17,” said Rivera. “Basically, everything is done, and we’re just working on a few details to close the deal.”

Segura (29-3-1, 25 knockouts), who is 31, is perhaps best known for his unification victory over Puerto Rican legend Ivan Calderon, whom he handed his first career loss by eighth-round knockout in August of 2010.

Segura also stopped Calderon in the third round of their rematch in April of 2011, but suffered the second loss of his own career by eighth-round stoppage against Brian Viloria in December of 2011. Segura is coming off a unanimous decision defeat to Edgar Sosa in May.

Meanwhile, Gonzalez (13-0, 11 KOs), who is 22, was last in the ring for a unanimous decision over Francisco Perez in April.
