Is Alvarez-Trout on for May 4?
Will fans be treated to a showdown of unbeaten junior middleweight titleholders Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Austin Trout in the co-featured bout to Floyd Mayweather’s May 4 ring return? According to Alvarez’s official Twitter page, the fight is on.
This simple statement, “Canelo vs. Trout May 4 MGM,” was Tweeted from @CaneloOficial on Friday evening, along with an Instagram pairing in-the-ring victory photos of both WBC beltholder Alvarez (41-01, 30 knockouts) and WBA titleholder Trout (26-0, 14 KOs).
Nothing offical has been announced by Golden Boy Promotions, which represents Alvarez, or Trout’s promoter, Greg Cohen, but if the fight is indeed a done deal it makes for a quality co-featured bout to the Mayweather-headlined pay-per-view show that will take place at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino on Cinco De Mayo weekend.
Mayweather’s opponent is still in the air. It was widely expected that Robert Guerrero would by his B-side, but the pound-for-pound king Tweeted that Devon Alexander was the “front runner” two weeks ago.
