Featherweight contender Miguel “Mikey” Garcia could face WBA titleholder Celestino Caballero on July 28 at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, Calif., according to promoter Sampson Lewkowicz, who won the purse bid to handle the fight.

“I already sent the contracts to the fighters, and the contract is for Indio, Calif., on July 28,” said Lewkowicz, who out-bid Garcia’s promoter, Top Rank Inc., for the right to promote the bout between THE RING’s No. 5-rated Garcia (28-0, 24 knockouts) and the magazine’s No. 9-rated Caballero (36-4, 23 KOs).

Trained by his father Eduardo Garcia and his older brother, fromer titleholder Robert Garcia, and managed by Cameron Dunkin, Garcia longs for the popularity and fan base of Mexican fighters such as WBC junior middleweight beltholder Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and WBC middleweight titleholder Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Garcia eschews what he calls the traditional Mexican “brawler” style for a more technical approach which employs his defensive skills, power and range. He stands nearly 5-foot-9 and lists Floyd Mayweather Jr. as his favorite boxer.

In Caballero, however, he’ll be facing an opponent with an even greater range; the 35-year-old Panamanian is unusually tall for the division at 5-foot-11.

Garcia is coming off a seventh-round knockout of Bernabe Concepcion, his 12th stoppage win in his past 13 fights.
