Chris Arreola isn’t wasting time getting back in the ring.

The heavyweight contender, who stopped Nagy Aguilera in the three round this past Saturday, will get back in the ring against journeyman Kendrick Releford on May 27 in Reno, Nev., on ESPN2, according to his trainer Henry Ramirez.

That’s two fights in 13 days.

“I was shocked at first when Dan brought it up in the ring after the fight,” said Ramirez, referring to promoter Dan Goossen. “Then, after I thought about it, I thought, ‘Why not?’ It wasn’t like he was in one of those grueling, taxing fights.

“We just wanted to check how he felt physically and he feels fine. So we went ahead with it.”

How unusual is the quick turnaround?

“I can’t remember another time at the 10-round level,” Ramirez said. “I know it’s done on the four-round level. And Mike Tyson used to fight a lot but that was when he was coming up.

“I’m not sure how many guys with 30 fights have done this.”

Josesito Lopez, who also is trained by Ramirez and promoted by Goossen, was supposed to fight Steve Chambers in the main event on May 27 but Lopez had to pull out because of a hand injury.

That opened the door to Arreola’s unusual opportunity.

And clearly he is fit. He weighed in at a relatively svelte 234 pounds for the Aguilera fight, which was stopped with the Nicaraguan taking a barrage of punches against the ropes.

“He’s in a perfect frame of mind. Why let him sit idly,” Ramirez said.
