Golovkin’s KO of Macklin a hit among viewers


WBA middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin’s third-round knockout of Matthew Macklin last month was a success among viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research cited by HBO.

Golovkin (27-0, 23 knockouts) scored his 14th-straight knockout against Macklin In his third appearance on HBO, delivering his best audience numbers on the network by generating 1.1 million viewers.

This was a 35 percent increase over Golovkin’s last bout on HBO, when 813,000 watched his seventh-round knockout of Gabriel Rosado in January, which was, in itself, a 19 percent increase over Golovkin’s HBO appearance in September of 2012 when he dropped Gzregorz Proksa three times on the way to stopping him in the fifth round.

In advance of his fight with Macklin, HBO’s documentary 2 Days: Gennady Golovkin accumulated more than 2.5 million viewers, surpassing last year’s average of 2.1 million per installment.
