Pablo Cesar Cano has new opponent in Alfonso Gomez of “The Contender”
Former title challenger Pablo Cesar Cano (29-5-1, 21 knockouts) will now face former “The Contender” reality TV contestant Alfonso Gomez (25-6-2, 12 KOs) on July 15 at junior middleweight instead of undefeated KeAndre Gibson after Gibson (15-0-1 7 KOs) was scratched because of an elbow injury last week, it was announced on Monday.
Cano-Gomez headlines a Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California on Estrella TV’s Boxeo Estelar telecast. Ring legend Sugar Ray Leonard will be on hand at the Fantasy Springs Special Events Center for autographs photo ops. Gomez went the distance with former titleholder Shawn Porter back in 2012 and was stopped by Canelo Alvarez in 2011. Cano, 26, lost a split decision in his last fight to Alan Sanchez last month and has losses against Fernando Angulo, Shane Mosley, Pualie Malignaggi and Erik Morales on his ledger.
The co-feature pits Jayson Velez (23-2-1, 16 KOs) against Rene Alvarado (23-7, 16 KOs); former amateur standout Cesar Diaz will make his pro debut on the undercard at junior featherweight. Azat Hovanissyan (8-2, 7 KOs) will also be in action at 122 pounds; Marco Magdaleno (3-0, 2 KOs) is scheduled to face Hugo Padilla (3-6, 2 KOs) in a four-round lightweight bout. Jhon Leon will also make his professional debut in a four-round welterweight fight against Steward Flores (1-0, 1 KOs) on the show.
