Regis Prograis is quickly making a name for himself in the junior welterweight division. His performance late Friday night reflected that.
Prograis made short work of Aaron Herrera, knocking him out in the first round at the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma.
Prograis improves to 17-0, 14 KOs, while Herrera drops to 29-5-1, 18 KOs.
From the opening bell, the southpaw Prograis, who resides in Houston, put Herrera on the defensive.
As the round progressed, Prograis focused his attack on the body of Herrera. Moments later, a straight left to the stomach hurt Herrera. Prograis followed up with a barrage of punches, eventually dropping Herrera to his knees. Herrera struggled to get up as referee Gerald Ritter counted him out at 2:17.
Prograis, who has now stopped 10 of his last 11 opponents, is slowly moving up the list of top prospects at 140 pounds.
In the co-feature bout, junior welterweight Ivan Baranchyk (10-0, 9 KOs) scored an emphatic first round knockout win over Nicholas Givhan (16-0-1, 10 KOs).
Ten seconds into the round, Baranchyk dropped Givhan with a left hook to the head. Givhan remained sprawled on the canvas as referee Gary Ritter counted him out at 21 seconds.
Golub bests Aguas
In a clash of unbeaten welterweights, Ivan Golub survived a second round knockdown to stop Marlon Aguas after the sixth round.
Golub goes to 11-0, 9 KOs, while Aguas drops to 9-1, 6 KOs.
Both fighters tasted the canvas in the second round. Golub dropped Aguas with a barrage of punches, but was dropped moments later courtesy of a counter right from Aguas.
Golub controlled the action the rest of the way as Aguas began to noticeably slow down. Golub dropped Aguas near the end of the sixth round, prompting Aguas’ corner to inform referee Gary Ritter their fighter would not answer the seventh round.
DeLoach stops Cook
In the opening bout of the ‘ShoBox: The New Generation’ telecast, junior middleweight Justin DeLoach scored a sudden and spectacular one-punch knockout over Dillon Cook.
Both fighters had their moments during the scheduled eight round bout. Towards the end of the fourth round, DeLoach landed a counter right hand to the head, dropping Cook to his knees. Cook remained slumped over as referee Gerald Ritter counted him out at 2:47.
DeLoach improves to 14-1, 8 KOs, while Cook (16-1, 6 KOs) suffers his first loss as a pro.
In non-televised action, junior middleweight Willie Nelson (25-2, 15 KOs) stopped Jonathan Batista (15-9, 8 KOs) at 58 seconds of the second round.
