Unbeaten light heavyweight Sean Monaghan will fight hard-hitting Donovan George on Oct. 16, Top Rank Promotions matchmaker Brad Goodman confirmed to RingTV on Saturday evening.
The 10-round bout will top a ‘MetroPCS Friday Night Knockout’ card, which will take place at the Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn, NY.
truTV will broadcast the fight live, beginning at 10 p.m. ET/ 7 p.m. PT.
Monaghan (25-0, 16 KOs) draws significant crowds when he fights in the New York City area. He resides in the Long Beach area, just south of Long Island.
In his last bout on June 13, Monaghan stopped veteran Fulgencio Zuniga in the ninth round in New York City. Five weeks prior to that bout, Monaghan fought to a 10-round, unanimous decision over Cleiton Conceicao in Newark, NJ.
Monaghan is ranked in the top 10 in all four major sanctioning bodies.
George (25-4-2, 22 KOs) figures to be the best opponent on paper that Monaghan has faced in his career. The fighter from Chicago has fought some of the best fighters at 168 and 175 pounds.
In his last bout in August of last year, George originally won a 12-round, unanimous decision over Dyah Ali Davis. However, the decision was changed to a no-contest when George failed a post-fight drug test.
Back in Oct. of 2012, George took current RING light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson into the 12th round before being stopped. He also has fought the likes of Edwin Rodriguez, Caleb Truax and Cornelius White.
Unbeaten welterweight Brad Solomon will open the truTV broadcast, likely against Steve Claggett in a 10-round bout.
The Top Rank card will take place the night before the middleweight title unification bout between the WBA’s Gennady Golovkin and the IBF’s David Lemieux, which will take place across the East River at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan.
