During the post-fight press conference following his unanimous decision over Canelo Alvarez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday night, Floyd Mayweather Jr. offered words of support to former rival and current Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya after he checked himself into rehab for substance abuse.

“I want Oscar to, you know, I want him to come home and get back to what he does best,” said Mayweather, as earlier reported by RingTV.com. “I’m saying as far as getting behind his young fighters and helping to coach them and keeping them on the right path. And Oscar De la Hoya’s a true champion. I commend him and take my hat off to him also.”

But on Monday, Mayweather found himself apologizing for a nasty message on his instagram account that mocked De La Hoya’s circumstances. Mayweather claims that he did not authorize the post and that it was sent by an employee.

Calling the incident “unfortunate,” in part, Mayweather said in a statement, “I apologize to Oscar and his family for this posting. I wish him well and am rooting for him to win his fight too.”

Below is Mayweather’s statement, obtained from Mayweather’s website, in its entirety.

“It’s unfortunate that a stupid picture was posted to my Instagram account earlier today that was not posted by me or authorized by me to post.

“As I clearly stated during my fight week and again in the post-fight press conference, I completely support Oscar De La Hoya and his family during this difficult time in his life. Although we have had our differences in the past, I stand by him unconditionally and would never personally disrespect him or anyone who struggles with addiction.

“I apologize to Oscar and his family for this posting. I wish him well and am rooting for him to win his fight too. I also apologize to all of my followers for this ridiculous post. I have no ill-will towards anyone.”
