Eric Gomez: Canelo-Golovkin rematch is 98-percent done

RingTV’s Cynthia Conte spoke with Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez about getting close to finalizing the Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin rematch for May 5, as well as the Jan. 27 HBO doubleheader featuring Lucas Matthysse and Jorge Linares.

  • Dee Money

Thank you Billy Joe Saunders for making this rematch happen so quickly.

  • Charlie U.

I’m in the minority here but I’d prefer to see them fight other people and then, if they win, run it back in September.

  • PrinceGian

I’m picking this fight to be a lot closer than the first, which means it will be awarded to Canelo. GGG will have to stop him to win the fight.

    • Dee Money

GGG had to stop him to win the first fight….hence the draw

  • Joey Kennedy

I don’t care to see GGG get ripped off again.De La Hoya is a dirty pig and I wouln’t give him a DIME of my money.Canelo will get ALL the perks -like the size of the ring-the location of the fight–the fixed judges–etc. GGG won the fight 8 rounds to four–CASE CLOSED! He doesn’t need to prove a thing.GGG should fight Sanders and take another title–then maybe Charlo for his last fight.Stay away from Golden Pig Productions!

    • Cousin Strawberry ( Cheech)

Agreed. GGG has nothing to prove, I also had GGG 8-4. I would had preferred he face Saunders and unify! GGG has lost a lot of time waiting for fishnets and ginger.

  • Arjay Cee

This fight’s where the payday is, so this one’s what we get.

Me, I’d rather see Saunders against either of them, or Jacobs against Canelo. Those matchups at least raise more questions than whether an aging GGG can once more drive Canelo mercilessly around the ring (while not looking nearly fast or slick enough to stop Canelo).

  • James Otis

Don’t care to see GGG get jobbed after chasing Canelo around a 30′ ring again. We’ve seen that fight and we know who won. If the Golden Boy darling hears the final bell, he wins. It won’t be the first gift DLH has bought for his little baby. Rather see GGG in a real fight. I get it though, the money is too good. I just hope GGG makes DLH pay out the keister for his first loss. If it’s going to happen anyway, make him PAY!!! I’m much more interested to see who GGG fights next. We know who Alvarez will “fight”, the Tijuana Tornado or maybe Danny Garcia.
