Vergil Ortiz-Eimantas Stanionis postponed again due to health issues

The off-again, on-again Eimaintas Stanionis-Vergil Ortiz welterweight bout is off. Again.
The clash between the two unbeaten welterweight contenders was due to headline a card this Saturday from AT&T Center in San Antonio to be broadcasted on DAZN, but a yet-undisclosed medical condition suffered by Ortiz caused the cancellation.
“Nothing is more important than the safety of our fighters, and we of course support Vergil’s decision 100 percent,” said Golden Boy Promotions, Ortiz’s promotional outfit, in a statement. “This unfortunate event does however open the door for one of Golden Boy’s top prospects, Floyd Schofield, to accelerate his profile by headlining in his home state of Texas. We will, as always, put on a high-action card from top to bottom on July 8 and look forward to showcasing all of our fighters both in San Antonio and on DAZN.”
A native of Austin, the unbeaten Schofield Jr. (14-0, 11KOs) will now headline the show in his fight against Haskell Lydell Rhodes (28-4-1, 13KOs).
This marks the third official postponement for this fight. Back in January, Lithuania’s Stanionis (14-0, 9KOs) was forced to undergo an emergency appendectomy, and that was followed by Ortiz’s episode of rhabdomyolysis in late March that caused the postponement of their new date scheduled for April.
The current reason why Ortiz (19-0, 19KOs) was hospitalized this time remains unclear.
More information coming soon.
