Gennady Golovkin, Vanes Martirosyan close to finalizing deal for May 5 fight

Apr

Gennady Golovkin will fight on May 5 following a mad dash to find an opponent on short notice.

A deal is close to being finalized to pit GGG against Vanes Martirosyan at StubHub Center in Carson, California, multiple sources with knowledge of the talks told THE RING. Golovkin will defend his middleweight titles on HBO, not HBO Pay-Per-View, after his highly anticipated rematch with Canelo Alvarez was canceled.

Tom Loeffler, who promotes the undefeated Kazakh, and Don King, the legendary promoter who works with Martirosyan, have been in contact this week, trying to hammer out a deal with time running out to market the fight.

On Thursday, in Los Angeles, Loeffler held a small, private impromptu press gathering at The Palms Restaurant to basically announce that there would be no announcement – yet. However, Loeffer assured the gathered media that he and GGG Promotions are still targeting May 5 as a fight date. However, Golovkin’s opponent and venue have yet to be determined.

“Nothing is finalized, but there have been a lot of rumors about what will happen on May 5, media members have been calling me non-stop for updates, so I wanted to meet with you, along with Gennady and Abel (Sanchez), to give you an update and let you know that we’re trying our best to make this happen.

“We’ve gone through a lot of names, (Gary) ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan was in the running, and he gave us his final answer (no) earlier this week, so the search continues.”

Golovkin seemed frustrated, as he’s been during much of the Alvarez promotion and clenbuterol scandal. Training and the hope of getting back in the ring as soon as possible is keeping him positive and centered for the time being.

“I’m still in Big Bear, working hard every day,” Golovkin said during the press luncheon. “I feel great. I ask Tom every day, ‘Please, I just want to fight.’ This is a crazy situation in boxing, not just for me but for everyone. It would be terrible if there was no fight on May 5.

“I like this sport. I like fighting. I want to get back to fighting four times a year. If I fight that many times, I can fight my mandatory, I can fight regular fighters, not the big names, but good fighters, and I can fight the big names. I just want to fight.”

Loeffler says three venues are committed to supporting Golovkin fighting on May 5 — StubHub Center, the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and Madison Square Garden — as is U.S. broadcast partner HBO.

“I want to apologize to the fans if the fight does not wind up in Las Vegas, but things have happened that are beyond our control,” Loeffler said.

“It would be patently unfair if he didn’t fight because Canelo was suspended. If the fight happens on May 5, HBO has pledged their full support to televise the show, and it would be the first time Gennady has fought on regular HBO since his defense against Kell Brook.

“(Undisputed female welterweight champ) Cecilia Braekhus and Chocolatito (Roman Gonzalez) want to be on the card, and they could be part of the HBO broadcast. Hopefully, we’ll have an announcement soon, and it will be a proper announcement and press conference. We’re under the gun now to save May 5, and we’re working hard to do that.”

For the time being, Martirosyan appears to be the front-runner for Golovkin’s May 5 opponent, although Loeffler said there are other names being considered.

“Vanes, for a number of reasons, makes sense. He’s here in L.A., he’s got a name, and he’s willing to do it,” Loeffler said, but he was quick to reiterate that there’s “no fight done yet.”

King couldn’t be reached for comment. Neither could HBO, which would have to sign off on the fight.

Earlier in the week it appeared fringe middleweight contender Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan would earn the nod, but he removed himself from consideration Tuesday, unhappy to take the bout on short notice for short money.

Golden Boy Promotions handles both O’Sullivan and Alvarez, who tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol in February. The Mexican star withdrew from the fight on April 3 after being temporarily suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 knockouts) and his team originally said he would still fight on Cinco De Mayo in Las Vegas, with the fight moving from T-Mobile Arena to the smaller MGM Grand Garden Arena, but now it appears to be leaving the state altogether.

Complicating matters for Loeffler in his search for an opponent for Golovkin is the IBF title he holds. Sergiy Derevyanchenko is the IBF’s No. 1 contender and his promoter, Lou DiBella, sent a letter to the organization requesting that a fight between the Ukrainian and GGG be ordered immediately.

Golovkin also holds the WBC and WBA titles at 160 pounds, and there’s a rotation system in place to ensure each sanctioning body’s mandatory obligations are fulfilled by the unified titleholder.

The IBF couldn’t be reached for comment, but they could strip Golovkin if he goes ahead with the Martirosyan fight.

Martirosyan (36-3-1, 21 KOs) is a longtime contender at 154 pounds, and he’s been lobbying for the fight on social media all week. The 31-year-old last competed in May 2016 when he dropped a narrow decision to Erislandy Lara in a title bid, and his other two defeats also were close.

Those came at the hands of Jermell Charlo and Demetrius Andrade, two of the most talented fighters in the sport.

If the fight happens, Martirosyan would face long odds to upend Golovkin as he moves up in weight. The Armenian will have his fair share of supporters at StubHub Center either way. He hails from nearby Glendale, which sports a large Armenian population.

  • KillaBlu

The sanctioning bodies already said no to this fight

    • ceylon mooney

      ah. thx man.

  • Uncle Sham

Sanctioning bodies already rejected this fight.

There is so much FAKE NEWS surrounding Golovkin’s potential opponent that y’all should probably just shut up until the official announcement is made

    • Moose

It is a Sham Uncle! So much BS mate.

    • Robert Archambault

It seems that both WBC and WBA have changed their mind on this fight and are willing to sanction it. Which is total bullshit in my eyes seeing as how WBA refused to sanction the fight with Kell Brook. But I do agree that until something official is released, it’s pointless to speculate.

      • PresnyaRulit

But the time is running out, Robert. If no official announcements are made this weekend, then GGG will probably give up Cinco de Mayo

        • Robert Archambault

So? What’s the big deal there? I’d prefer he fight in June against BJS to be honest, or take his mandatory in June and BJS in September. I’m Canadian, not Mexican and I couldn’t care less about a Mexican holiday.

          • PresnyaRulit

I share your sentiments and would like GGG to take Derevyanchenko and BJS fights later this year, especially since Canelo can be disqualified for a year. But Abel is Mexican and he probably wants to steal this date from Canelo.

          • Robert Archambault

They don’t even celebrate one of the two holidays in Mexico at all and the other is a minor one! They only have meaning because of boxing in the US. It’s a complete farce to be honest.

          • PresnyaRulit

Not even in the US, but only in California or Texas with a huge Mexican community. In NYC these dates are absolutely irrelevant either.

  • Nixtradamus

So, GGG defends his middleweight title against a shitty junior mw has-been. Crap.

    • Genjuro77

I wouldnt say shitty, according to most boxing fans he beat Jermell Charlo and was robbed. He also drew with Lara who was the #1 at 154 for years and the guy that GGG was supposedly ducking.

      • Robert Archambault

He has never fought at 160. He’s been on the shelf for two years. It’s a shitty choice.

        • David T

          Blame red.

      • Teddy Reynoso

        How authoritative your source!

      • ceylon mooney

only lara sez ggg ducking him. lara says stupid shit sometimes. id luv to see that fight. lara im sure could make himself one or two fightz away from mandatory at 160. but thats a long line to get in.

  • PresnyaRulit

Let him take Derevyanchenko; yes, this guy is dangerous, but he’s ready to go and Loeffler does not want to give a green light to this fight. Derev is not worse than Canelo, albeit not nearly as popular

    • Robert Archambault

Who says he is ready to go? DiBella? The guy talks a lot on Twitter but has he actually approached Loeffler about it or is he all just talk?

      • PresnyaRulit

DiBella even seems willing to use Derev’s IBF mandatory status as a leverage in talks.

        • Robert Archambault

Which is why this fight will not be made for May 5th. DiBella just wants GGG to be stripped of the title so his guy can fight an easier fight for it. He really has no interest in getting the best deal and the best promotion for his fighter.

    • Wayne

Not on that May 5th date he isn’t

      • ceylon mooney

oh derevchenko wasnt sayin ill fight u may 5?

        • Teddy Reynoso

Never heard him.say that. In fact he said he is ready to take Canelo’s place as foe and title challenger.

          • ceylon mooney

            thats what i thought

        • Wayne

Sometime during the month of June

          • ceylon mooney

gotcha; id be way into that

  • TMT NYC-DA REAL GHOSTBUSTERS

This Vanes already loss to the Honey Boo Boo! There is no value in this fight.

    • Ewan Leaper

It’s actually not bad at all for such short notice, better than that O’Sullivan guy. Martrosyan is a good fighter, a loss to Andrade doesn’t change that because he’s maybe better than good. I don’t think he causes too many problems but what do you expect at this point? The guy is a legitimate contender level talent, it’s more than I expected given what time they had to work with.

Expect the IBF to make a new “champion”out of two guys who don’t belong in the Top 5 middleweights, Golovkin has probably shot himself in the foot in terms of unifying all the belts but in truth when you look at how the sanctioning bodies operate then what does it really matter?

  • wrecksracer

Martirosyan? How does a guy that is practically retired get a shot at the MW crown? Is he even ranked at 154 or 160?

  • wrecksracer

    is Rod Salka available?

    • James Otis

      Josesito Lopez!

      • ceylon mooney

ashley theophane. only broner has had the balls to call him out. golovkin wont even mention his name.

  • Colin Mc Flurry.

Team G desperate to fight any stiff may 5th.

    • Dave LaRose

Not the most intelligent post on here. Just sayin’…

  • Douglas Cohen

Meh. *IF* this fight happens, at least they don’t expect us to shell out for PPV. That’s about the only worthwhile thing I can say for it, because GGG against a thrice-defeated inactive junior middleweight moving up in weight is hardly a riverting matchup.

  • Darren James Smith

Really……a pointless fight and an opportunity for boxings biggest crook to make money……

    • Robert Archambault

Really? Oscar won’t make any money from this fight.

      • Darren James Smith

I saw the name Don King and got pissed off

        • Robert Archambault

Oh! Forgot that he was still involved in boxing. Explains why Vanes has been doing nothing for two years though. LOL

          • Dave LaRose

Great post!!! And so true. Too bad. I like Vanes.

  • Teddy Reynoso

Gennady prepared long and hard for this schedule. It’s just fitting that he be paired with someone as close to the caliber and capability of Canelo who is willing, ready and available. And that’s Derevyanchenko. For so long, the Gennady camp has been complaining about how the top fighters are avoiding him, forcing them to fight lesser opposition. Now the situation has changed and they are in the position to choose the right opponent for Gennady in the defense of his titles yet. We will see.

    • Genjuro77

So people are blaming GGG now for this fallout? Canelo pulled out of the fight a couple weeks before it happens, most fighters he was going to face said they dont have enough time to prepare for such a big fight and still its GGGs fault? Can this guy do anything right or do you people just try to shit on GGG even though Canelo failed two tests, pulled out of the right and basically ruins GGGs career.

      • Teddy Reynoso

Where in my post did I even insinuated that? Please don’t read into something I never said. Btw, Canelo is already out of this. The onus is really on team Golovkin to come up with an acceptable suitable opponent for the May sked given that they have decided to do it on their own. Don’t try to swerve or skirt that fact and issue.

      • Giuseppe

yeah but the Golovkin team and management are in control of how they react and who they decide to fight now, aren’t they? Golden Boy has no say in it. Vanes is a weak opponent for a MW champ, end of story. If no-one else was available to fight on that date, fair enough. Unfortunately, we all know Andrade and Devy ARE available and begging for the fight. So… they have gone for a soft touch. Which is disappointing as GGG is probably better prepped for this fight physically than the last one.

        • David T

Come on man, Andrade doesn’t want to fight anybody.

          • Giuseppe

            He fought Vanes!

          • David T

4-5 years ago? Even then it was a disputed decision. The guy is using GGG’s name to get people talking about him again. Waste of talent.

    • Robert Archambault

In that case, you should be fine with forcing Canelo to fight Jacobs as his first fight when his suspension is over, right?

      • Teddy Reynoso

Yes of course. But I won’t use the word force. In this case, it is team Gennady’s call who will they pick as substitute opponent for his title defense unless ordered by the world boxing body as the IBF. But even then his camp can always opt for the fight as a non title bout or scrap the whole thing altogether.

        • nick hapta

You would love to see GGG get it on with a grinder like Dchenko prior to his rematch with Alvarez. Perfect, while Canelo stays on a diet of Mexican beef.
GGG would not lose against the Ukrainian, but it would most likely be a hard, taxing fight. Do you remember who was supposed to be Canelos next opponent after GGG? Not Jacobs, Charlo or Andrade but O’Sullivan!

          • Giuseppe

G always looked better when he fought frequently.

        • Robert Archambault

I don’t think IBF would accept it being a non title fight. I really don’t see their problem here. If they don’t want to sanction the fight, so be it. That is no reason to strip a title from a champion who has honoured each and every mandatory defense he has had ordered. Even when the fans denigrated him for doing so. Fans dumped all over him when he fought Wade, a mandatory defense. But they turn on him when he ends up in a situation not of his own making because of a former champion who ducked out on HIS mandatory obligations to fight GGG as did the ‘champion’ he won the title from.
For the most part, fans are ignorant pricks who know very little about the sport and only respect how much a purse happens to be. I’m getting tired of it and I remember why I stepped away from following boxing for over a decade. The sanctioning bodies are idiots and the fans tend to be even worse.

    • Carlos

If he skips his ibf mandatory he needs to be stripped just like the wbc was getting ready to do to Alvarez before he vacated.

  • Left Hook2

I honestly cannot decide…is this George Bush’s fault or Obama’s?
Not the fight I want (Deravyanchenko), but I will be happy to see GGG fight. GGG, Hurd, Kovalev, Spence…these guys can fight their shadows and it will be entertaining.

  • Al Del

scratch the May 5th date and fight Deveryanchenko on a different date.. late June perhaps.. My problem is that GGG was avoided numerous times over and over again.. had to wait on Canelo and Cotto for a good minute and some of you are shitting on him for not wanting to take a short notice fight with a good fighter! GTFOH!! Chenko has had 12fights and everyone showing him all the love for being a mandatory while everybody was shitting on GGG saying he wasn’t even deserving of a shot having over 25+ fights under his belt.. Sure Deveryanchenko is good and passes the eyeball test but NO ONE of note on Deverychenko’s record says he’s very much deserving! Point I’m getting at is that there’s a double standard when it comes to GGG haters!

    • Teddy Reynoso

As there’s double standards for Gennady defenders. When he was fighting suspects and marginal, you justified that he has to because the big names are avoiding him. Now that the opportunity has opened to choose the right competition for him, you are saying that he is being forced to fight an undeserving as you say while some of your ilk say a dangerous challenger who has volunteered to step up to fight him. So called haters, actually just skeptics, cannot win an argument with your like.

      • Fist_ti_cuffs

Best thing I’ve read all day!!!

      • Al Del

yeah GGG has been training long and hard for this fight date, But the problem is that he was training for someone else. not DChenko! Big Difference!

and yeah they can win an argument if they actually make god damn sense!
And if they actually compare apples to apples rather than apples to oranges!

You’re missing the point though.. Nobody would take a dangerous opponent at such short notice! Maybe the one that’s being given the opportunity will. But a Named fighter will never take a dangerous opponent on 3 weeks notice whether he’s deserving or undeserving! it’s not making an excuse and it’s not a double standard because the opportunity is not GGG’s.. the opportunity is Dchenko’s who has probably been training for the last year solely thinking of this fight whereas GGG has been thinking of DJ, BJS & CA! like i said, make the fight a month or 2 months later..

So now the haters will say he’s ducking because he didnt want to fight him in 3 weeks notice & and wanted to better prepare and fight him 2 months later instead?..lol. makes no fucking sense!! “GGG is such a little bitch because he wanted 2 months to train instead of 3 weeks!”..smh.

I’m not saying to avoid it or to pay hush money to step aside. I’m saying move off of May 5th.. The one being given the opportunity is Dchenko not GGG and you can’t sleep on a dangerous opponent with 3 weeks notice!

        • Teddy Reynoso

You and Mike have no higher respects for your idol than we so called doubters and haters do. You mean it’s okay for Gennady to take on Vanes but not DChenko on short notice? Speaking of short notice, nobody is at advantage or disadvantage here since it can be safely assumed that Vanes and DChenko also initially did not train with Gennady in mind as Gennady did in preparing for Canelo. That’s not an issue considering that boxers as a rule like soldiers train and prepare for any eventuality and any adversaries. Despite your branding me as hater, I view Gennady as a special fighter who is adaptable and versatile enough to take on anybody at 160. It is you and your like that have been depicting Gennady as somebody of less stature in insisting that he be allowed more time and leeway to choose and prepare for a particular opponent in place of Canelo. Just rethink what you have been posting here and you will get what I have been saying.

          • Al Del

C’mon teddy you’re better than that!! where did i say that it was ok to fight Vanes? please show me.. i don’t like that fight either!! i don’t like any fight other than moving off of May 5th.. Taking a fight on short notice is not respecting & overlooking your opponent and fact of the matter is that i don’t like the idea of “allowing any time” since he’s getting older by the minute.. but the right move imo is to train for your opponent with proper time.. the risk of taking a fight on short notice is higher than allowing 2 months to go by and getting older. Has nothing to do with depicting him of a lesser stature but he’s not the perfect fighter by no means.. So therefore a fighter trains for his opponent and tries to pick up on those tendencies he thinks he can expose.. 3weeks time isn’t sufficient time to pick up on those tendencies & train for those.. Dchenko I’m pretty damn sure has been training and studying GGG for a while now. The whole thing should have been “scratched” as soon as Canelo was suspended.

          • Teddy Reynoso

You should know Gennady better than that!

          • Teddy Reynoso

You implied that when you only mentioned the name of DChenko.

          • Al Del

            Implying is guessing..

        • Teddy Reynoso

You implied that when you only mentioned the name of DChenko but not Vanes.

          • Cashtime

I’m declaring the three knockdown rule and throwing the tile in against Del.

          • Al Del

are serious with that question? c’mon now.. lol.. obviously they’re thinking along the same lines that I’m thinking when it comes to Dchenko. Because they know he shouldn’t be taken lightly.. if they were taking him lightly then “yeah sure line him up” type of mentality would take hold and the fight would be happening.. where i don’t agree with them (and we’re certainly allowed to disagree & it doesn’t make it right or wrong) is them not wanting to move off May 5th.

      • Mike M.

As I’ve said before, Golovkins fought the #1 and 2 middleweights in the same year (Alvarez was a top 10 p4p fighters). What more does the guy have to do? the guys the man…he can do whatever he wants. Why the in the world would they take on Denchenko, who’s recent victory came against a guy who’s 22-22….why doesn’t he deserve to get rewarded for nothing? forget its on short notice. Never mind that Denchenko’s best victory was against Tuerano Johnson who I’m not even sure is rated anymore? Its not Golovkins fault his opponent was caught with a banned substance, just how it wasn’t Wilders fault when Ortiz was caught with a banned substance in his system.

The only reason they’ll even go on with the may 5th fight is so that everyone on the under card can get paid for all the trouble they had to go through.

        • manadon23 .

You can’t backtrack now. Can’t go back to fighting Dominic Wade and willie Monroe type fighters. He fought three straight solid opponents including brook, why fight Vanes now, a guy who’s not a 160 lber on May 5th.

          • Mike M.

Its not really back tracking, they’re 3 weeks away. They aren’t going to take a top 5 contender on short notice, and no ones gonna take a fight with Gennady for short money. They’re only going on with the fight so they don’t waste the time they spent in camp, there’s also a lot of non-millionaires on the card that still need to get paid.

        • Michael Montero

          Derevyanchenko is a quality fighter.

          • Mike M.

Indeed he is, but they also spent the majority of their camp training for Canelo. It just isn’t gonna happen, fight night is less than 3 weeks away.

      • Ewan Leaper

Opinions are like arseholes, so on so forth… I have no idea about this Eastern European chap but Martirosyan has proven to be in and around the world level, he’s a reasonable choice for a late stand in. Golovkin had signed on to face Alvarez and he’ll have his reasons for keeping the May 5th date so I think any accusations that he’s ducking a 12 fight novice are fairly unfounded.

I think we fail to see the bigger picture, boxers on the most part don’t pick and choose who they fight and there’s mountains of politics we don’t understand- “ducking” is usually the territory of promoters and managers.

Golovkin is 36, he’s probably feeling his body and won’t fancy a stop start training regime at this point, I think that is fair enough reason to stick to the original date. He’s maybe thinking of all the people that booked travel and accommodation too. If he’s decided to say “You know what, unifying these belts is as much navigating a corrupt political minefield as it is winning them in the ring, what does the IBF title truly matter?” then fair enough, he’s been stiffed often enough to have that right.

Fans vs Detractors is like politics, the loudest sides of the argument are usually the most extreme sides and the truth is usually nearer the middle. I’ve enjoyed Golovkin and think he’s a likeable guy, whatever the truth I’m pissed that he didn’t get a chance to fight Cotto and Martinez. I also think he’s been one dodgy decision away from signing on to fight Billy Joe Saunders and calling it a day, if he still harbours ambitions to become undisputed he’s going to be around for a while yet.

      • manadon23 .

Exactly👏🏿…now we got all these killers at 160 he doesn’t want to fight his mandos? Now he wants to dig up
a 154 lber off a two year layoff. Don’t let this guy do this in Cinco de mayo

        • Cashtime

          You see the light!!

        • JGault

          Dummy,
His “mando” was Canelo and it was worth a generational money.
Golovkin didn’t put a needle in his ass so he could avoid fighting him.

          Haters gonna hate.

      • Cashtime

Amen Amen and Amen. This proves that just because you know boxing and SEE whats really going on doesn’t make you a hater or a racist which GGG fans use against anyone who dare says anything bad about him.

        • Michael Montero

Black fans don’t exactly make it hard to level the racist accusation at them.

          • Cashtime

Yes it’s only the black fans. Yep it’s our fault whites decided to enslave our ancestors just like you think it’s the Jews fault for being murdered for living in Germany.
You see this subject begins a looonnng way back.
So just stay in your boxing lane and except the fact that GGGs days are sooo numbered and the second he gets in with a NAME opponent he will fold. Canelo was criticized for years for ducking him yet he couldn’t live up to the monster people thought he was in dominating him. That’s what makes him a hype job

          • Michael Montero

Is it white peoples fault blacks commit a disproportionate amount of crimes. Do you ever talk about the fact that more blacks and Muslims are/were more involved in the slave steady than whites.

          • Michael Montero

If GGG was a black you’d be living vicariously through him.

    • ciobanu catalin

Its beacause he cant stay in camp that long and he has to fight now because he hasnt been active. So they ll take anyone right now, its partly ggg fault for puttin all his eggs in redheaded basket and waitting for that bitch, but mostly its canelo s fault for being a cheater and a born c‰unt

    • Cousin Strawberry ( Cheech)

      Great post! 👍

    • manadon23 .

He’s the mandortory, not about if he “deserves” it.

      • Al Del

yeah but i never said to avoid the fight!! I’m saying just make it happen 2 months later so you can prepare properly.. thats all! nothing more.. I like Dchenko and he isn’t to be taken lightly.. and i just so happen to think that if someone takes a fight in 3 weeks notice then you’re pretty much taking your opponent lightly.. but yeah i’m all for the fight happening though.

  • Al Del

chavez JR at 168 makes the most sense in my opinion.. he’s mexican, Bigger, theyve sparred before, and he wouldn’t be having him as drained as Canelo had him

    • Robert Archambault

And it would probably take Chavez 6 months to get down to 168. Keep dreaming.

  • Chris Stans

Are they obligated to make a fight for May 5?

  • Arjay Cee

“It would be terrible if there was no fight on May 5.”

No fight? There’s already Bellew-Haye II: This Time, The Leg Comes Off. Then there’s Dmitrii Chudinov on the other side of the world against a 10-0 guy with half the known consonants in his last name.

So not potentially the greatest night of fighting, yeah. But why make it even worse with GGG vs. Nobody Who Matters?

  • PrinceGian

May 5th is dead in the water as far as I’m concerned. Move to a different date against Derevyanchenko if he is willing to fight. Going in against someone who hasn’t fought in 2 years will do nothing for GGGs career.

  • Giuseppe

loads of mitigating circumstances…. BUT…. GGG never used to be a ‘mitigating circumstances’ kind of fighter. This is a crap fight, which has no intrigue whatsoever. Nothing going for it. It’s worse than Wade because at least Wade was a MW. There is no ‘what if…’ factor, which is basically what drives all good match-ups. GGG and Loefler have bungled this one. GGGs value and appeal is that he ACTUALLY doesn’t fuck around… if he had taken on Andrade or Devy… his ‘I like fight’ persona would be intact. but this? this is fucking around.

    • David T

This is a situation where GGG gets a complete pass in my book. Blame the ginger.

      • Giuseppe

this mess certainly has ginger prints on the trigger.

  • PrinceGian

According to an article on ESPN, Loeffler and Golovkin were approached to fight Derevyanchenko but declined due to it being too short notice to fight such a dangerous fighter and that it would be too short a time to promote the fight. If this is correct then their logic is terrible. GGG is already in training to fight a dangerous opponent and May 5th is already a hot date and will sell no matter what.

    • mikescapes

What’s so hot? The venue is changing apparently. No Mexican Canelo involved. The date is no longer crucial. Who is buying? It’s not PPV any longer. What I think is missing in all the comments (I’m not picking on you) is the observation that GGG trained for Canelo. Not Chenko, or the others. So I don’t think he has to court danger just to fill in a date because the original opponent went missing. Although I believe GGG would beat any of the volunteers mentioned, somebody could get lucky. Being in shape doesn’t negate the axiom “styles make fights.” If this is a stay busy fight I’ll watch. The more important question is what’s down the road for GGG. Some really interesting options out there.

      • Dee Money

Everyone loves to cite “styles make fights” until it doesnt fit their specific bias. Coincidentally, I don’t think the style difference would matter all that much, I think GGG would mid-round KO Sergiy

  • David T

Surely the IBF won’t strip GGG of the belt considering this whole fiasco has been caused by the cheating Mexican?

  • Michel Desgrottes

disgusting, where is sergi, lou dibella needs to petition for a strip of the ibf title

all these unifed champions who don’t satisfy their mandatories and remain active need to be stripped, keith thurman especially

    why is ggg fightinga 154lber

this is not honorable of him

    • Charlie U.

Were you saying the same thing when the WBC declared Mayweather was in a ‘voluntary’ stage and didn’t have to fight Pacquiao? Or, speaking of Thurman, when Floyd avoided him (his WBA mandatory) and settled on Andre Berto?

      • Michel Desgrottes

        I sure was

        • Charlie U.

          Ok, just checking.

  • Lion king

Funny thing many of you blaming canelo because Loeffler can’t find an easy opponent for GGG, I think GGG beats any top opponent blame Loeffler cause he’s so afraid of losing all that money vs Canelo

  • Charlie U.

This is getting silly now. I know he wants to fight on Cinco De Mayo but why not wait one more month and try to work something out with BJS. I know boxing is a business and always has been, but damn this A side/B side crap seems to have gotten so much worse in the last 10 years. Canelo has pissed hot TWO times, and yet he is still basically dictating the affairs of the middleweight division (a division in which holds not a single belt, by the way). He and everyone else most likely know that he will get a 6 month retroactive suspension that will have him eligible to fight again in September. Total BS that this cheat has so much leverage. And as much as I love GGG, he doesn’t get a pass from me this time. I believe his team should be working on the BJS fight in June and screw Canelo, just like he’s screwed over them and the rest of the boxing world.

  • Reggie Woodard

Mismatch but whatever, so be it.. Let Golovkin have his stay busy fight as we all know he’ll fight Alvarez in September.

I like Andrade, Charlo, Derevyanchenko. They should be angling to fight one another.

Top tier for MW(Golovkin, Jacobs, Alvarez, Saunders).
2nd tier for MW(Andrade, Derevyanchenko, Charlo0. Have to see more out of Murata before including him.

  • manadon23 .

This is supposed to be the p4p best fighter in the world according to this publication(RING).

  • Alan

I don’t mind one “tune-up” fight from Golovkin after the strange run of fights and promotions that he has had, but after that it needs to be the middleweight contenders out there for him from now on (and not Canelo–just forget him and forget that fight for at least the next year).

  • Angel

LOL, so GGG used to cry he was avoided and probably was but now he’s doing the exact same thing, now we have young strong dudes at 160 he suddenly HAS to bring up a gate keeper from a lower weight class. I’m not hating, most fighters do this, just pointing out the irony.

  • Cashtime

Pound for pound the best my ass!! Whatever GGG’s team says he doesn’t have to follow, he could answer the call to half of the division who are volunteering to fight him if he REALLY wanted to. A real pound 4 pound champ would. At least O’Sullivan is Ranked at middleweight but Vanes???!!!!

So many excuses for this guy from his fans after all these years. Face it Saunders, Chenko, Charlo and even Boo would take his ass right now and afterwards we can talk about how old he’s gotten, but in his hayday……..please!!
