Christian Mbilli to kick off his 2018 against Jesus Gurrola tonight in Montreal

Middleweight prospect Christian Mbilli returns to action tonight after a very successful debut year of 2017. The former amateur standout and 2016 French Olympian will face veteran Jesus Gurrola in an eight-round bout at the Montreal Casino in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Mbilli (7-0, 7 knockouts), who is originally from Cameroon and now lives and trains in Montreal, made his pro debut on February 9 of last year. Mbilli was very active in 2017, fighting seven times in a span of about 10 months.

Promoter Yvon Michel put Mbilli in his first eight-round bout on December 14, in which Mbilli, 22, dropped Robert Swierzbinski three times en route to a fifth round technical knockout victory.

Gurrola (24-12-3, 12 KOs), who resides in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, last fought on June 30, losing an eight-round majority decision to Phil Lo Greco. He has lost four of his last six bouts.



In the 10-round main event, middleweight contender Francis Lafreniere will square off against Albert Onolunose (22-1-1, 7 KOs).

Lafreniere (16-5-2, 9 KOs) has won his last 13 bouts and his ranked No. 9 by the WBO and No. 15 by the IBF. Onolunose is unbeaten in his last five bouts.

Unbeaten Dario Bredicean (15-0, 4 KOs) will face Guillermo Romero (12-4, 9 KOs) in an eight-round super middleweight bout.

Super middleweight Shakeel Phinn (16-2, 11 KOs) will square off against Remigiusz Woz (11-2, 6 KOs) in an eight-round bout.
