LAS VEGAS — The fight went about as expected. The post-fight announcement was a surprise.

It was announced moments after Canelo Alvarez shut out Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on Saturday that Canelo’s next fight will be against Gennady Golovkin on Sept. 16, news that for a lot of people probably compensated for a Canelo-Chavez fight that wasn’t remotely competitive. Fans have been clamoring for the fight for more than a year.

Canelo’s RING middleweight championship and Golovkin’s three sanctioning body titles will be on the line.
