Gennady Golovkin and Danny Jacobs will finally meet on March 18 at Madison Square Garden on HBO PPV for Golovkin’s middleweight WBC/IBF/WBA titles, RingTV.com has learned. Golovkin also tweeted the news at 3 p.m. on Saturday and Jacobs posted a video on Instagram heralding the news.

“Coming live from Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn New York. Got some big news,” Jacobs said, wearing a fur coat. “It’s going down. Me vs. GGG, Madison Square Garden, March 18. It’s finally here. Sorry for the wait. Just had to straighten a couple things out. But it’s finally here. I’m excited. I’m ready to shock the world. BK — let’s do it.”

RingTV.com reported on Friday a deal was imminent and would be reached before Monday’s purse bid. Golovkin, as champion, was due to control a 75-25 split of the winning bid. Fearing Jacobs’ unhappiness with the percentage, Tom Loeffler, who handles Golovkin, made it a mandate to reach a deal before a purse bid to avoid any of the complications that could have resulted from the auction. Jacobs, Golovkin’s mandatory, is due to make a career-high payday.

The negotiations had been dragging on for months with a Dec. 10 date and several WBA deadlines bypassed as the talks continued. But they ultimately ended on a high note: Golovkin will finally get another top-notch opponent after he has been criticized for taking on overmatched foes. And Jacobs (32-1, 29 knockouts), a cancer survivor and former amateur prodigy, will have a chance to realize his potential with another title shot after he was stopped in the fifth round by Dmitry Pirog in 2010.

Jacobs also returns to HBO for the first time since 2010, and Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) will make his second appearance on HBO PPV after his eighth-round demolition of David Lemieux in 2015. Golovkin was desperate to face a marquee opponent after his attempts to lure Canelo Alvarez in the ring kept getting pushed off. In Jacobs, he has found just the man to determine the division and boxing’s best.
