LAS VEGAS — Claressa Shields, the two-time Olympic gold medalist, defeated Franchon Crews by a shutout decision in a four-round super middleweight bout on the Sergey Kovalev-Andre Ward card Saturday at T-Mobile Arena. Both fighters were making their pro debuts.

The fighters entertained the sparse crowd with some wild exchanges. Shields clearly got the better of Crews, who also was a good amateur, landing a number of hard rights. Only Crews’ solid chin allowed her to remain on her feet.

Shields was the only American to win gold medals in each of the last two Olympics. And she is the first fighter from the U.S. to win gold since Ward in 2004.
