The well-traveled Jonathan Barros could be making his professional debut in the United Kingdom soon.

With a split decision win against Satoshi Hosono on Monday in Tokyo, Japan, Barros (41-4-1, 22 knockouts) emerged as featherweight titleholder Lee Selby’s mandatory challenger. Barros, a former 126-pound champion, won the world title eliminator by judge’s scores of 117-111, 116-112 and 113-115 while sustaining a cut over his right eye that could push his bout with Selby into 2017.

Selby (23-1, 8 KOs) of Wales last fought in April against Eric Hunter, winning a unanimous decision in spite of tasting the canvas for the first time in his career. Selby won the title against Evgeny Gradovich in May of 2015 and has defended the strap twice. Selby was ringside on Monday at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.

Argentina’s Barros, who held a featherweight title in 2010-11, has losses to Yuriorkis Gamboa and Mikey Garcia on his ledger.  Selby’s UK promoter, Eddie Hearn, recently criticized the Welshman for not fighting often enough. Selby, who has fought three times since 2014, is also signed with Al Haymon.
