While many believe that the result of Gennady Golovkin’s IBF, WBA and WBC middleweight title defense against IBF welterweight titleholder Kell Brook is a foregone conclusion, the odds have not prevented a frenzied media from hyping up this intriguing showdown, which takes place on Sept. 10 at the O2 Arena in London, England.

Following on from their New York press conference, the unbeaten pair met again on Monday at the Dorchester Hotel in London.

“I’m the best welterweight on the planet and nobody wants to fight me” said Brook, who is rated No. 1 by THE RING at 147 pounds. “When (Golovkin) and I stand next to each other, there’s not going to be anything in terms of size. I’m going to bring the speed up to the middleweight division and I’m ready for this fight.

“To be the best you have to beat the best and it doesn’t get any bigger than Triple-G. There’s a fear factor, but I’m going to be so sharp, so alive on that night. Nobody has ever got the best out of me. I want to test myself to the highest you can be in this sport and I always find a way to win.”

The defending unified titleholder was brief with his own remarks.

“I’m very excited and I’m very happy to be in London,” said Golovkin who is rated No. 1 by THE RING at 160 pounds and No. 3 pound-for-pound. “I’m looking forward to giving U.K. fans, true boxing fans, this amazing event. I respect Kell and his team. He says he’s ready and I’m 100 per cent ready too.”

The fighters’ representatives also spoke about the event which caught everyone by surprise and sold out in just 11 minutes.

“Every now and again you make a fight where the hairs on your arms stand up and this is two of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world,” Eddie Hearn, the head of Matchroom Boxing, stated. “To be a great fighter you have to do great things. Kell Brook is moving up two weights from his natural division to do just that and, from our side, we are very confident.”

“The heart Kell Brook has shown is much bigger than many of the big-name middleweights who won’t get in the ring with Gennady Golovkin,” responded Tom Loeffler, boss of K2 promotions. “This (fights) really solves a problem for Kell and Gennady because I know Eddie has had the same problems I’ve had, getting a big name in the ring (with Kell Brook).”

It’s been over 50 years since a reigning welterweight champion upset a reigning middleweight champion. That was when Emile Griffith claimed a 15-round unanimous decision over Dick Tiger on April 25, 1966, at Madison Square Garden, New York.
