Carl Frampton defeated Leo Santa Cruz by a majority decision to take Santa Cruz’s WBA featherweight title in an action-packed fight Saturday in Brooklyn.

Santa Cruz threw more punches than Frampton but the Irishman landed a similar number and his shots were cleaner, which evidently was the difference in the fight.

Frampton (23-0, 14 knockouts) stunned Santa Cruz (32-1-1, 18 KOs) with a left in the second round but neither fighter was seriously hurt in spite of an inordinate number of hard punches that landed.

Santa Cruz landed 255 of 1,002 punches overall, according to CompuBox, a relatively low 25.4 percent connect rate. That was an indication of how good Frampton was defensively. Frampton was 242 of 668 (36.2 connect rate) but 211 of the shots he landed were power punches. Santa Cruz landed 191 power shots.

Two judges scored it for Frampton, 116-112 and 117-111. The third had it a 114-114 draw.
