Jesus Cuellar to reboot training with Freddie Roach

Featherweight contender Jesus Cuellar has been scheduled to face Abner Mares in the biggest fight of his career on June 25 at the state-of-the-art Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, on CBS as chief support to Keith Thurman-Shawn Porter.

However, just over a week prior, news circulated that the bout had been canceled. Reports suggest Mares had failed a routine eye exam and wouldn’t be allowed to fight in the state of New York.

Understandably, Cuellar (28-1, 21 knockouts) was disappointed to hear the news.

“It was just the kind of news you don’t want to hear, especially since I was 100 percent ready to go,” Cuellar told RingTV.com through his manager Sebastian Contursi. “But there’s nothing I could do since these things happens in boxing. It was terrible at first but, the next day, I was already focused on keeping up my training.”

It’s said that things have a way of working themselves out and they seem to have for the better for the heavy-handed Argentine pressure fighter. When his trainer Juan Manuel Ledesma had to return to Argentina on other business, Cuellar and Contursi were able to procure the help of one of the best trainers in the sport, namely, Freddie Roach.

“See, God makes things happen for a reason,” the 29-year-old southpaw said. “Four days after hearing about the postponement of the fight, I was training with Freddie Roach, since my last trainer could not keep training me, as he had some previous commitments. We had to re-organize the whole training but I don’t complain. This time around, I will be in even better shape to knock out Mares.”

Though the Cuellar-Mares fight has yet to be given a firm date, it is widely believed it will be rescheduled and will happen over the next couple of months.

Contursi feels the derailment of the original fight has actually helped his client.

“Jesus just took the news like a real professional, even though he had just completed a three-month, tough training camp,” said Contursi. “Now he is even more motivated with Freddie Roach on his side. We are looking for the Mares fight to be rescheduled as soon as possible and waiting for news about it.”
