As first reported by RingTV.com, ESPN will kick off its Premier Boxing Champions 2016 slate with a June 4 card headlined by light heavyweight contender Artur Beterbiev at the Bell Centre in Montreal, it was formally announced on Wednesday. Beterbiev will face Ezequiel Maderna in the main event. The co-feature pits undefeated welterweights Bryant Perrella and David Grayton.

ESPN released the rest of its PBC schedule for 2016 on Thursday with the matchups and locations still to be determined. The network is slated to show seven shows June through August with a simulcast in Spanish on ESPN Deportes and streaming on WatchESPN. After the June 4 show (11 p.m. ET), ESPN plans to return on July 2 (9 p.m. ET); July 9 (7 p.m. ET); July 15 (9 p.m. ET); July 21 (8 p.m. E.T.); Aug. 5 (9 p.m. ET) and Aug. 12 (9 p.m. ET).

“Premier Boxing Champions has delivered exciting boxing events that have garnered strong boxing viewership over the last year,” said Matthew Volk, director of programming and acquisitions for ESPN in a press release. “We are enthusiastic to showcase this new set of fights as a consistent summer series on ESPN.”

Beterbiev (9-0, 9 knockouts) hasn’t fought since last June after undergoing shoulder surgery that forced a world title eliminator in November on Showtime to be scratched. The two-time Russian Olympian now based in Montreal is facing a boxer in Maderna (23-2, 15 KOs) who is moving up from super middleweight and has lost previously to Thomas Oosthuizen and Edwin Rodriguez.

Beterbiev’s promoter Yvon Michel hopes June 4 is the first of three dates for Beterbiev this year that could lead to a clash against unified light heavyweight titleholder Sergey Kovalev, whom Beterbiev beat in the amateurs.

“Artur is the next boxing superstar in Quebec,” Michel said in a release. “He injured his shoulder, but the surgery fixed everything and we plan to give him three fights in 2016. We aim at Sergey Kovalev by the end of the year or the beginning of 2017.”

The June 4 co-feature is a matchup of undefeated welterweights in Parella (13-0, 12 KOs) and Grayton (14-0, 10 KOs). Junior middleweight Jamontay Clark (9-0-0, 6 KOs) is also scheduled to appear on the card, as is 2008 Columbian Olympian Oscar Rivas (18-0, 13 KOs).
