Legions of loyal fans made their way to the Manchester Arena on Friday to watch local hero Anthony Crolla (30-4-3, 12 KOs) weigh in for his maiden WBA lightweight title defense against the fierce-punching Venezuelan Ismael Barroso.

Crolla, who is rated No. 4 by THE RING at 135 pounds, weighed in at 134.5 and judging by his body language and demeanor had made the limit comfortably. Barroso (19-0-2, KOs) appeared a lot more drawn at 134.3 pounds but his angular facial features could be deceiving.

Both looked to be in excellent fighting shape.

“I made the weight well,” confirmed Crolla when interviewed by Sky Sports in the U.K. “I’m enjoying being champion too much to give it up on Saturday night. It’s up to me to go out there and put on a career-best performance and retain my title.

“When you’re a world champion you’re supposed to fight the best and there was no way I was going to swerve Ismael Barroso. He’s one of the most feared lightweights in the world and beating him will prove that I’m up there among the very best.”

Despite having home advantage, Crolla will enter the ring as an underdog against Barroso. The southpaw challenger has already made a significant impression on U.K. soil by knocking out Kevin Mitchell in five rounds last December.
