Felix Sturm tested positive for the anabolic steroid stanozolol following his majority decision victory against Fedor Chudinov in February and is at risk of being stripped of his WBA super middleweight belt, according to the Associated Press.

Sturm, who won the title on Feb. 20 in Germany, told the German newspaper Express, the first to report the news, he was in the process of hiring a lawyer and of having the “B” sample tested.

“I have been tested hundreds of times in my career and the results were negative,” Sturm told the newspaper after learning of the positive “A” sample by the WBA on Friday night. “The fact that after two months such (news was reported) and the (German boxing commission) was not informed — how can that be? I will (hire) lawyers and open the ‘B’ sample.”

Sturm’s win in February came on the heels of a split decision loss to Chudinov (14-1, 10 knockouts) last May for the vacant title. Sturm (40-5-3, 18 KOs) has now won a title five different times.

RING-rated No. 9 super middleweight Sturm further told the German news agency SID, “At first I was shocked,” he said. “This is all very strange, especially as it has taken eight weeks to be informed of the result. I have had my blood and urine tested hundreds of times. Nothing has ever been found. I have an absolutely clear conscience. I’ll be getting a lawyer. I haven’t worked 26 years for this.”

Stanozolol may be familiar to sports fans since it’s the same steroid the Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson tested positive for in the 1988 Olympics when he was stripped of his gold medal after winning the 100 meter final.

Sturm insisted he doesn’t need steroids to build strength. “I have had muscles since I was 14,” he told SID. “What good would it do me? I have a body which is already well trained. There have been many cases where the ‘B’ sample has refuted the first test. So I am not worried. I didn’t do it, 1000 percent.”
