David Brophy out to shock George Groves
Scotsman David Brophy insists that he will punish George Groves if the former world title challenger is looking past their 12-round super middleweight bout in London, England, on Saturday.
Groves, who is rated No. 6 by THE RING at 168 pounds, seeks a fourth world title shot after being narrowly outpointed by WBC champion Badou Jack in September, and Brophy is relishing the opportunity to cause an upset.
“I love being the underdog,” said the unbeaten 25-year-old. “I expect George to be fast and to try and do a job on me, but he is looking towards a big fight in the summer and they will be treating me as a stepping stone.
“Because I haven’t been in the limelight, he hasn’t heard of me. He will expect me to be a walkover but I won’t be. He’ll have a shock.”
Brophy, who is trained by Billy Nelson, was already in shape when the Groves fight was offered and he has completed plenty of top-class sparring with one of the best super middleweights in the world.
He said, “I had been sparring with Callum Smith before the call for this (fight) came. It is the best preparation I could have got; Callum is a special, special fighter so to be sparring with him has been perfect for me.”
